YLFF-111 "Kadajs"

14th September of 2013.
This was a planned well before activation and as absolutely clear that at least 2 areas of 3 planned will be activated. Started at 8AM local time, went to areas through Estonia and the first planned area was YLFF-089 Dures wood. Arriving on the place I saw that this is not the place I am able to activate with my car. Some 1,5km had to be done with an accumulator battery, transceiver and other stuff on my back. That was too much for me this time. So I left this activation to be done some time later. Then drove forward to YLFF-111 "Kadajs". Unfortunately as there were only gravel roads and some fog too, I missed the right local road to the left. And after some time lost myself in the middle of nowhere..... Then went back and finally found the right road to territory. As later I discovered from the maps, I was just in half of kilometre from YLFF-089, but anyway last part of distance should be done on my legs. May be will do this but later. So I started the operation only at about 12. The disappointment for me was really big, too much time was lost unexpectedly. Anyway although my antenna this time was something like sloping dipole with the lowest end only 4 meters above the ground, the propagation was good and I enjoyed many local Latvian stations on 40m SSB as someone noticed me on spots during the Latviand roundtable at the same time. Then my laptop showed that power will end very soon. Checked the power supply but it looked like it is fine. Some minutes later my laptop died. Good, that I brought my keyer with me this time. I could continue to operate writing the log on sheet of paper. Did not this for quite a long time, but old skills never die!
In picture gallery You can see two cranes feeding on the field about 200m from my operation site.
After 2 and a half hours 175 QSOs were in my log. But Mr. Murphy was still with me. When driving away from there, I heard strange noise coming from below my car. Stopped, checked and found nothing. But it still was there. On the second check I found that the engine undercover is broken. Fixed this as I could and then followed to my next stop - YLFF-147.
